Enjoy the Lough Derg shore visiting the picturesque village of Garrykennedy in County Tipperary

This self-guided route will take you from Nenagh to the Lough shore at Garrykennedy, and back to Nenagh.  Along the way you will see the beautiful North Tipperary countryside, with fantastic lake views, a castle and a historic church.

Pit Stops

First Stop - Nenagh Tourist Office

This route starts by the tourist office in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, which is a historic market town, founded back in the 12th Century.

Your Garmin GPS device will guide you via quiet back roads through the North Tipperary countryside, passing through villages such as Ballycommon and Newtown.

From Nenagh, you will proceed via backroads through farmland to the village of Ballycommon, where you can get food or a drink at the Thatched Cottage, and on to Dromineer.

Along the way, keep an eye out for the fantastic Hanly's Woollen Mill, which specialises in Irish made tweed hats, throws, scarves and blankets.  From here you can take a stroll along the river bank, or just admire the view from the bridge.

Youghal Quay

After Ballyartella and Ballycommon, the route brings you to Youghal Quay via a series of back roads.

Please be aware that there is a brief stretch at Newtown where you will be riding on the R494 before turning off onto back roads once more.  Please be cautious, and aware of other road users on this stretch.

Youghal Quay is your first visit to the Lake Shore, and is a beautiful place where many local people go swimming.

5km after Youghal Quay, you will arrive in  Garrykennedy.

Garrykennedy is a beautiful harbour village, which includes the 15th century castle built by the O'Kennedy family.  Here, you can take a stroll in the woods, which are a true gem.

Why not get a coffee from the street vendor, or if you prefer, a spot of lunch at Larkin's pub, before returning to the tourist office at Nenagh via quiet back roads.
