Lorrha Friary (6)

Monastic Settlement Tour

This tour is suitable for all levels of ability.  Groups are a maximum of 4 people and is suitable for all ages (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult).

Setting off from your accommodation with tour guide Rob you will first head to Lorrha. Lorrha is a deeply historic village which features 2 amazing churches, an ancient abbey and a Friary.

It was a monastic settlement, originally founded around 600AD. The oldest surviving buildings are the 11th century St Ruadhan's Church and the 13th Century Dominican Friary.

Also featured on this tour is the O'Kennedy family stronghold at Lackeen Castle, which dates back to the 12th Century.

The history of the village is fascinating, featuring long periods of peaceful monastic settlements interspersed with less peaceful incursions from the Vikings, the Normans and the forces of Oliver Cromwell.  Thankfully though, today we can promise you a nice peaceful stroll through history where Rob will be happy to provide some interesting stories.

After leaving Lorrha and Lackeen Castle behind, you can either return to Fuchsia Lane Farm via quiet country roads, or can continue on to the 12th Century Redwood Castle before returning to Fuchsia Lane Farm.

Setting off from your accommodation with tour guide Rob you will head on quiet country roads through the North Tipperary countryside to the lake shore at Luska. From here you will work your way north along the Lough shore.

As you travel north, you will pass beautiful quays, with fantastic lake views, at Old Kilbarron and Mota. In between the two is Kilbarron Abbey, a 12th Century church on the site of a 6th century abbey, which was established by the great traveller St Bairrfhionn.

Next port of call is another small Irish village called Ballinderry, where you will pass over the 18th century Mouse Hole toll bridge.

Finally you will take a wooded back road which will bring you to the Quay at Terryglass, before returning to Fuchsia Lane Farm.
